Document Retention Period / Automatic Expiration

Source: paperless-ngx/paperless-ngx#12629 · opened by @xCezzo
It would be very helpful to have the ability to assign a retention period or expiration date to documents, so they can be handled automatically once that date is reached.

In some cases, documents are only relevant until a known date. Being able to mark them in advance would ensure they are not kept longer than necessary and would remove the need for manual follow-up later.

Suggested behavior:

• Allow users to define a retention date when uploading or editing a document.
• Once the retention date is reached, the system could either:
1. Automatically delete the document, or
2. Mark it for removal with a status/tag such as “For Removal”, allowing users to review it before deletion.

This would improve document lifecycle management, reduce manual cleanup effort, and help keep the system organized—especially for temporary or time-sensitive documents.
