Question about total calculation

Hello,
I've got a question about the calculation of the 3 totals in the dashboard. I'd love to know why you rely on the payment date rather than the date of the invoice once the invoice is paid.
For example : at the end of the year 2018, I charged a customer but he only paid me this year and then, this amount appears in the first total for the year 2019 when it should rather appear for 2018.
What do you think ?
