Invoice template $amount without currency?

Looking to add a simple link to my invoice emails by passing the total as text in a link such as [this]( using the following in my email template:
<a href=" with Paypal</a>
which uses "$100" resulting in a link that includes the dollar sign, thus breaking.

Is there a way to pass the template variable an operand or am I using the wrong template variable?
