Expose client.payment_balance variable to invoice design

Would like the ability to display "client.payment_balance" as a variable on invoices as a means to show remaining unapplied balances across a clients payments (total from any/all). Ideally it would be nice to show this value in: Invoice Design - Invoice
This would be a pretty big deal as a means to handling/informing clients who pay in advance for services and are invoiced over time. @hillelcoren was kind enough to find this variable for me but said I should request it be "exposed" to the invoice design settings.
